Volunteer to Close the Digital Divide

Tech Exchange relies on volunteer support to keep Bay Area residents connected to the tech tools they need. Volunteers from all walks of life contribute their time and talent to help close the digital divide. You can become part of the digital equity solution! A variety of group, individual, ongoing, and done-in-a-day opportunities are available.

Digital Skills Class Volunteer

If you’re over 18, have basic computer skills and a passion for encouraging others to learn, and are available 3-6 hours per week, you’re an ideal candidate to help conduct our digital skills classes! Volunteers assist our teachers with setting up and breaking down the classroom, signing in participants, and providing hands-on help during instruction. Volunteers are needed for classes taking place at libraries and community sites in six Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Solano). Bilingual volunteers are especially welcome!

Warehouse Operations Volunteer

Are you interested in getting laptops into the hands of those who need them? If you have a few hours a week and basic tech or warehouse skills, we have fun opportunities in Oakland for you to make a difference. Volunteers aid our warehouse staff in sorting donations of equipment, testing laptops, removing working parts from broken devices, and preparing refurbished laptops for redistribution. Join our friendly team!

Pro Bono/ Special Skills Volunteer

Can your specialized skills help Tech Exchange close the digital divide? Let’s chat! We would love to learn about your background and discuss opportunities for ongoing or project-based volunteering. Our mission would benefit from volunteers with expertise in content creation, Salesforce and/or Google Workspace administration, skilled laptop repair, e-commerce marketing, inventory management, and B2B outreach, with hybrid or remote volunteering options where appropriate.

Corporate Groups

If your corporate group is looking for a way to give back to the community and do some team building, Tech Exchange has two types of done-in-a-day group volunteer opportunities. Your team can empower the next generation of tech leaders by participating in a virtual Tech Talk, a facilitated panel discussion in which professionals share their career paths and advice with our interns. Or, your team can come in person to our Oakland warehouse for a hands-on half day supporting our refurbishment operations.

Equipment Donation Drives

Individuals, businesses, and community groups that wish to get more involved can host an equipment donation drive to benefit Tech Exchange. We’ll provide all the information and materials you need to get the word out and encourage others to donate their used computers. Tech Exchange will coordinate with you before, during, and after the event.
